What are Humulin N KwikPens?
Humulin N KwikPens are pre-filled, disposable insulin pens designed to make it easier for you to administer your doses of insulin. It is filled with Humulin-N, which is a brand name for NPH insulin, otherwise called insulin isophane. It is considered an intermediate-acting insulin which has a relatively slow onset and a long duration of action that lasts up to 24 hours.
What is it used for?
The Humulin N KwikPen is filled with Humulin-N, which is used for the control of high blood sugar in the treatment of diabetes. The KwikPen is compact with pre-filled doses, and does not need to be refrigerated once opened and in use, which makes it an easy and convenient way to administer your insulin needs at home or on the go.
How does it work?
Humulin N contains insulin isophane, also known as NPH insulin, which has been modified so that it can have a longer duration of action. It is classified as an intermediate-acting insulin and has a slower onset of action than Humulin R (about 90 minutes after injection) and a longer duration of effect that can last up to 24 hours. Intermediate-acting insulin is a background or basal insulin because it provides you with an entire day’s worth of blood sugar level control. Humulin-N is structurally identical to normal insulin but it has protamines, which are small proteins, mixed in to slow down its onset and expand its length of action to last the whole day.
Side effects
Common negative effects may include:
- Hypoglycemia
Less common negative effects may include:
- Insulin allergy
- Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)
- Skin site reactions
Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar is the most common side effect of insulin. Because of this you should always carefully monitor your blood sugar levels. If left untreated, low blood sugar levels can lead to the loss of consciousness, coma and even death.
A general allergy to insulin can cause
- a rash all over your body
- sweating
- wheezing
- fast pulse
- shortness of breath and a sudden drop in blood pressure.
Generalized allergy reactions are very serious and can require hospitalization. Get medical assistance immediately if you think you may be having a generalized allergic reaction to Humulin N.
Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) may develop if your body does not have not have sufficient insulin. This can happen if you forget your insulin, take a smaller dose, eat more than you should, or if you get an infection or fever. Symptoms of DKA come on gradually and tend to get progressively worse. The symptoms may include, flushed face, feeling drowsy.

Dosage
Your dose of Humulin N will likely be specific to you and adjusted based on your specific metabolic needs, blood sugar level monitoring results and blood sugar level control goals. Dosage adjustments may be needed if there are changes in your physical activity, meal patterns (such as nutrient content or timing of meals), in kidney or liver function or if you develop a serious illness.
