What are Humalog Mix 25 KwikPens?
Humalog Mix 25 KwikPens are insulin pens filled with a mixed suspension that contains 25% insulin lispro injection and 75% insulin lispro protamine.
The Humalog KwikPen is a pre-filled, disposable insulin pen that has a compact size and simple design that allows you to manage your blood sugar levels at home or on the go with accurate, easy and convenient insulin delivery.
Insulin lispro is a rapid-acting insulin analog that has been genetically modified to be absorbed better and start working faster than naturally occurring insulin. Lispro protamine is an intermediate-acting insulin analog that has protamines. Protamines are small proteins added to insulin in order to help slow down its onset, as well as increase its duration throughout the day. When combined together, these two types of insulin analogs provide full day coverage against the normal daily fluctuations in blood sugar levels, such as between, during and after meals.
What are they used for?
The Humalog Mix 25 KwikPen contains a mixture of insulin lispro and insulin protamine, which are insulin analogs used to help control blood sugar levels in adults and children with diabetes.
This medication is used for convenient injection under the skin. The KwikPen technology allows for the simple administration of your insulin without the uncertainty involved with complicated injection techniques and the additional involvement of needles, syringes and vials.
How do they work?
The insulin analogs are man-made insulin that mimics the action of naturally occurring insulin, which is a hormone produced by the beta cells in your pancreas. Insulin plays an important part in the regulation of blood sugar levels by controlling the breakdown of food. It is critical for the absorption of sugar from the blood into your liver, fat and musculoskeletal cells.
Insulin lispro is a mealtime, or bolus insulin, which is used during mealtime to prevent the spikes in blood sugar that happen shortly after you eat. It has a quick onset and a relatively short duration of action, which makes it a great option for short-term blood sugar control. Insulin lispro protamine is an intermediate-acting insulin that has a considerably longer onset and duration, making it suitable for more long-term blood sugar level control that you may need during the night when you are asleep, for example. It has a similar absorption and activity profile to NPH insulin, also known as isophane insulin, another commonly prescribed intermediate-acting insulin analog.
Side effects
Common unwanted effects may include:
- Hypoglycemia
- Injection site irritation
Less common unwanted effects may include:
- Lipoatrophy
- Diabetic Acidosis
- Hypokalemia
The most commonly reported side effect of this medication is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
Symptoms of which may include
- nausea
- headache
- drowsiness
- excessive hunger
- fast heartbeat
- dizziness
- tremor
- confusion
- weakness
- blurred vision
- seizure (convulsions)
- sweating
- trouble concentrating.
Another common side effect is skin site irritations, such as swelling, redness and itching at the injection site. The irritation may be related to things such as irritants in the cleansing agent or due to poor injection technique, and not necessarily the medication itself.
A condition called diabetic acidosis can develop if your body has too little insulin. This may happen if you miss your insulin dose, take less than you doctor has prescribed, eat too much, or develop an infection or a fever. The symptoms usually come on slowly, over a period of hours or days, which include thirst, a drowsy feeling, loss of appetite and flushed face. Rapid pulse and heavy breathing may be signs of more severe symptoms. If left untreated, this can result in the loss of consciousness, coma, or even death. If you experience any of these symptoms it is important that you get medical assistance immediately.
Other less common side effects can include hypokalemia, which is the presence of low levels of potassium in the blood, and lipoatrophy, which is the localized loss of fat tissue around the injection site. Serious side effects may include anaphylaxis, which is a severe allergic reaction, as well as other hypersensitivity or allergic reactions.
How to take this medication
Humalog Mix 25 KwikPens contain a mixture of fast-acting and intermediate-acting insulin. Your dose should be given within 15 minutes before a meal, or within 20 minutes after you begin eating.
The Humalog KwikPen is a disposable pre-filled insulin pen. The KwikPen dials one unit at a time and you can give yourself many doses with only one pen. You can give yourself up to 60 units in one injection. Refer to the KwikPen “instructions for use” for detailed instructions and remember to always follow your doctor’s directions above all others.
It may be injected under the skin (subcutaneously) in the stomach area, upper legs, back of the upper arms or buttocks. Do not inject this medication directly into a muscle or vein. Make sure to use a different site each time you inject and do not overuse any single injection site. Contact your doctor to determine what are the most appropriate injection sites for you.
Dosage
How you take this medication will likely be different from other patients because it will depend on your eating habits, metabolic needs, and other lifestyle variables. Your doctor will prescribe the proper dosage and dosing schedule that is right for you.
Humalog Mix has been shown to be approximately equal to naturally occurring human insulin, with one unit having the same blood sugar-lowering effect as one unit of naturally occurring human insulin, but its effect is more rapid and has a shorter duration. If you are changing the type of insulin you are taking, it should be done cautiously and with your doctor’s consent. Changes in insulin type, strength, manufacturer, or method of manufacture can cause you to need to change your dosage.
As with all insulin products, the full course of action of Humalog Mix 25 can vary considerably for different people or even within the same person. The rate of insulin absorption and its onset of activity are known to be affected by the site of injection you choose, exercise level and other variables. Always carefully follow your doctor’s instructions to allow for these types of changes. Other things that can affect your dose and dose schedule are illness, other medications, pregnancy and travel.

Humalog Mix 25 KwikPens should never be shared between patients, even if you change the needle.
